Inclusion

We have been working with the feedback from previous County events and following our event vision to ensure that “Challenge 26 will be a fun, exciting opportunity to connect as a County, to experience a diverse range of engaging, youth-shaped activities and to create lasting memories in a safe and supportive environment”. We are committed to providing the following support in order to make our event more inclusive for all attendees.

About Inclusion at Challenge 26

Bramham Park is a wonderful location that we are very lucky to be able to use to host our event, however due to the nature of the site, it does provide some accessibility challenges. Therefore we have changed our camping and activity field layout, and have plans to provide practical support for the areas which may potentially be more challenging underfoot.

We are hiring in additional accessible toilets to be placed around the site for attendees to use as required. If you are aware that you will need to be camping nearby one of these, please speak to your District Camp Lead who will liaise with us, so we can ensure you are in close proximity.

We are also planning two transport options to be able to help attendees move around the site more easily. The first being a shuttle bus, which will safely travel around the site, stopping at designated bus stops to pick up/drop off attendees. This is planned to help those who need it, to get to where they are required to be (including security points on the outer edge of the park). The second, being what we are calling ‘dial a buggy’. This will involve a passenger buggy to collect and drop off attendees to more specific locations that the shuttle bus is unable to access (such as closer to camping areas and parts of the activity field).  This is designed for those with specific needs (e.g. mobility) and will involve phoning a number, which will be received by event control who will then allocate a driver to support.

We are in the process of creating and sharing lots of pre-event information, to  support those who would benefit from advanced knowledge of the event. This will include a social story, key information to be aware of, the event programme and an image/video walk through of site upon build.
Throughout the event, we will be using a digital system to support task allocation of volunteers, and this will be supported through WiFi availability on site (for adults). We hope this aids volunteers to understand the task they are expected to do, as well as the location and timings of their allocated task.

We will of course, offer support to those who may find digital systems more challenging to use, please reach out to us if this is the case.
Part of our allocated programme will include designated ‘quieter times’ on the activity field. This will include reduced sensory input, such as loud music and flashing lights, which we know can be overwhelming for some attendees.

Throughout the activity times, there will be open access to the event ‘Safe Space’, which provides a calming, safe area for attendees to regulate in, should they become overwhelmed. We have used this at many of our recent events and have had wonderful feedback from attendees. Alongside this there will be the event ‘Listening Ear’, which provides a visible point of contact on the camp that can provide support to both young people and adults alike. They will listen to, empathise and provide support with anything expressed, whether this be providing information, signposting, supporting a lost child or checking on the welfare of volunteers.'

We will have a dedicated ‘Pause For Thought’ zone on the activity field, which will provide a welcoming space for quiet activities. We will also have a separate reflection space which can be used for prayer.
An area of feedback we are keen to work on following our last Challenge event is signage. Will will provide clear, easy-to-read signage across the site, and this will include visible allergen signs for every activity that requires them.

We continue to meet with volunteers to explore further ideas of how to make the event more accessible. If you have any suggestions of how we can make this event more inclusive, or if you have any specific questions that you would like support with in order to enable young people or adults attend this event, then please get in touch via our Inclusion Advisor - becky.burrell@cycscouts.org.uk - and she will endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible.
